My Thoughts on Same Sex Marriage

I've thought long and hard about this hot button topic and my personal feelings towards it.  I decided it was time to blog my point of view.
First let me lay some groundwork about where I'm coming from.  I am a Christian who tries to live her life by following God's laws.  Politically, I consider myself an independent.
Now, that being said, my first thought is, America is a country who prides it's self as being a non-discriminatory land.  Denying someone the right, legally, to wed the partner of their choice is discrimination in every sense of the word.  Therefore, I think that it is the governments (at all levels) role to maintain the rights of all of it's citizens.
That being said, however, I have a very strong issue with any church's role.  It's my feeling that church's should follow the teachings of the bible, which tell us that no man should lay with another man, and no woman with another woman,  (Leviticus 18:22 - Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination.{King James}).
So, basically this is where I lie with this issue:

  • Should same sex marriage be legal in the eyes of the law? YES.
  • Should same sex marriage be preformed by a member of the clergy (of any denomination)? NO
  • Should same sex marriage even be an issue within the constraints of religion?  NO.
I realize that this post is likely to inflame some people.  I also realize that other's opinions vary from my own and I respect the right of every human being to verbalize their own opinions.  I will not, however, become involved in a war of words.  If you don't like what I have to say, feel free to voice that opinion in a mature, non-abusive manner, or skip on to the next blog.
